Unite for Hope Walk

Vital funds were raised in support of “silent cancers” at Pancare Foundation’s Unite for Hope Walk at New Farm Park in August.

Pancare, which organises Unite for Hope, is a charity which supports upper GI cancers such as pancreatic, liver, oesophageal, stomach and biliary cancer.

Catherine Mahy, Pancare community manager, said the $14,000 raised will go will go toward research into early detection and help expand our complimentary support services for patients and their families across Australia.

“(Unite for Hope) reflects the hope, remembrance and unity of patients, carers, families and their friends,” Ms Mahy said.

140 participants walked along the river to show support for their family members, friends and colleagues affected.

This year Pancare has partnered with telecom Tangerine to host the annual walk.

“Upper GI cancers are what we call silent cancers that don’t show themselves until the cancer’s quite progressed… You’d have the fittest, healthiest people that get something like pancreatic cancer which has low survival rates and it’s just devastating,” Ms Mahy said.

“The more that (message) gets out there… It will just lead to more access to research and hopefully some breakthroughs so that Australian families will not have to be affected.”

You can get involved by donating to Pancare, participating in fundraising events, and most importantly, as Ms. Mahy said, by “telling family, friends, anyone who will listen” about upper GI cancers.

140 participants walked to support loved ones.
