Sandakan Memorial
Located at the Brunswick Street entrance to the New Farm Park ring road, the Sandakan Prisoner of War Memorial commemorates Queensland prisoners of war who died at Sandakan and Ranau and on death marches in World War Two.
It is a red granite block with a grey slab top depicting a mountain range. The sculptured terrain of Sabah illustrates the route of the death marches, shown by a bronze ribbon, between Sandakan and Ranau which was substantially swamp and dense jungle in 1945.
It was built in 1995 in memory of 1800 Australians of the 8th Division AIF and 750 British troops who fought gallantly in the defence of Malaya and Singapore during World War II.
The plaque records the names of Queensland POW who survived imprisonment in the Sandakan Camp. They were able to provide evidence of the atrocities committed in POW camps in Borneo.
