Your unused yarn could change a life this winter

The Teneriffe Lions Club’s Needles-4-Need team needs yarn donations to continue supporting Brisbane’s most vulnerable residents.

A simple ball of yarn, a pair of knitting needles and a generous community spirit are making a real difference across Brisbane.

Over the past 12 months, the Teneriffe Lions Club’s Needles-4-Need Beanie Program, coordinated by Liz Cassidy, has donated more than 400 adult beanies to local organisations supporting people experiencing homelessness and hardship.

The colourful handmade beanies have been distributed through 3rd Space, Valley Hearts, Trinity Community Pantry and Coffee Brigade Brisbane, helping provide warmth and comfort during the cooler months.

The achievement is particularly impressive given the program is powered by a small but highly dedicated group of volunteer knitters and crocheters. While winter highlights the need for warm clothing, the team works throughout the year, steadily creating beanies that are ready when they are needed most.

Members gather twice each month at Ground Alchemy Coffee Shop, where they share skills, exchange ideas and collect the latest batch of handmade creations. The regular meet-ups have become as much about friendship and community as they are about crafting.

With demand continuing, the club is now calling on the local community for support. Donations of 8-ply and 10-ply yarn are particularly welcome and will help keep the needles clicking and the beanies flowing.

Anyone with unused yarn tucked away in a cupboard, a leftover stash from completed projects, or supplies they no longer need is encouraged to donate. What might be gathering dust at home could soon become a warm beanie for someone doing it tough.

For the volunteers involved, every donated ball of yarn represents another opportunity to provide warmth, dignity and a reminder that someone in the community cares.
