Brisbane’s tallest bridge opens

Kangaroo Point Bridge, now the tallest bridge in Queensland, was officially opened by Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner at a public celebration on December 15.
The bridge is one of five ‘green bridges’ in Brisbane exclusive to foot traffic and personal mobility devices aiming to make moving around the city on foot, bike and public transport easier.
The opening began with an Indigenous Smoking Ceremony held by Aunty Teresa Williams and Uncle Rob.
“I think my ancestors would like this big log across the river,” Aunty Teresa said.
The Brisbane City Council said the $288 million bridge will be responsible for 84,000 cars off the road each year.
“For the first time in Brisbane history, there is now a direct connection between Kangaroo Point and the CBD which is great for residents and visitors as well as businesses on both sides of the river,” Cr Schrinner said.
Local Ingrid Tall said: “I’ll use it everyday, I can walk to work now.”
A bridge on this site was first proposed in the 1860s and its modern realisation includes five viewing platforms with panoramic views of the Brisbane River and city skyline, and two new plazas at each end.
Two new hospitality venues, cafe ‘Mulga Bills’ and restaurant ‘Stilts Dining’, are due to open in early 2025 operated by the Tassis Group.
